Publish Date: Eyl 23, 2019
Today, the Executive Director of UN Women, Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka announced that the Unstereotype Alliance will become an official partner of the Generation Equality Forum to be held In France 7 - 10 July 2020 with a pre-meeting in Mexico 7 - 8 May 2020.
The Unstereotype Alliance, which launched in 2017 is an advertising industry consortium of companies convened by UN Women globally and via national chapters to channel their power in support of equality for all people in the UN’s 193 member states. The advertising industry has enormous potential to influence attitudes and challenge the stereotypes that underpin the discrimination and inequality we all want to end.
Members of the Unstereotype Alliance will therefore commit to joint action with other stakeholders as part of several thematic action coalitions.
In recognition of this potential and the commitment of its growing membership base, the Unstereotype Alliance commits to representing and engaging the advertising industry at a global level and within individual countries to contribute to this once in a generation opportunity.
Through the partnership with governments and civil society, UN Women’s Unstereotype Alliance aims to use advertising as the avenue to promote positive shifts in societal norms thereby touching on the social, cultural, economic and humanitarian issues on that UN Women and the United Nations seek to redress.
About the Generation Equality Forum
2020 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – the most progressive blueprint for advancing women’s rights. It will also commemorate 20 years of Security Council Resolution 1325, 5 years of the Sustainable Development Goals, 10 years of UN Women and 75 years of the United Nations.
These anniversaries come at a challenging time for multilateralism and women’s human rights. At this time, the equal enjoyment of the human rights of women and girls, in all their diversities, and in particular, those from marginalized communities, is at risk. The Generation Equality Forum serves as an opportunity to galvanize action towards gender equality. It will gather advocates from around the world to call for action and accountability for the full realization of the gender equality agenda.
